Interview Nerves
Nerves can sometimes throw us off our ‘A Game’ in an interview. Let’s disregard the negative elements of nerves and look on the positive side, remembering why nerves can play an important role in the process of an interview.
Nerves show you care! If you get a sense of butterflies in your tummy, it shows you want this and it is important for you to succeed
Nerves show that you are human! Confidence is good; arrogance is not. There is a fine line between the two characteristics and nerves will help to demonstrate that you have faith in your abilities without being egotistical
Nerves create adrenaline! This is your body’s way of getting you revved up and ready to take on the challenge
We sourced these Top Tips for the interview itself, use them to help guide you through the management of those pesky nerves…
Remember to smile. Smiling releases endorphins, which make us feel better.
Maintain open body language and eye contact, and try to avoid nervous fidgeting.
If you don't understand a question, don't be afraid to ask for it to be repeated or rephrased. You can even ask if your interviewer can come back to it later.
Take time to consider your answers and don’t be afraid of natural pauses in the flow of conversation. You're unlikely to lose any points for taking a longer time to think or respond to a question. Employers will be more interested to see how you handle yourself under pressure and keep calm under duress.
Make a conscious effort to speak slowly, as nerves generally make us talk faster.
